Catarina Correia Arnhold is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice centers on storytelling, intuitive making, and an ongoing exchange between the physical and source. Born in Salvador, Brazil and currently based in Ōtautahi, New Zealand, she increasingly draws on her ancestral lineage - the body and traditional ways of interacting with land as emerging new threads within her work.
Primarily self-taught, she creates hand-built works that unite sculpture, painting, and drawing, and continues to expand her practice across new mediums and materials. Her approach is rooted in exploration and process.
I wish this to be a process driven project, investigating oral storytelling traditions through folklore and gathering of people, to produce creative problem solving and ideas. Documentation of the island's indigenous folklore and stories alongside daily walks and writing/drawing. Sourcing natural materials and pigments from the land and farm to inform the research further. This will lead me to create sculptures driven by these local narratives and materials.
