Silvestre, the majorera

Silvestre, who came to live with us in April 2023, is a unique donkey. Not only is he very intelligent, witty and loving, he is also a Majorera. And that makes him quite special.

The Majorera is an endangered breed of small donkeys indigenous to the Canary Islands. There are hardly any left, with numbers around 200 (most of them living on Fuerteventura, where their name also originates from: the people who were born and raised on Fuerteventura are referred to as majoreros).

At only 1m00 to 1m20 at the withers, this is one of the smallest donkey breeds in the world. In the pictures below, you can see the massive difference with Dolly.

Silvestre was in a pretty bad shape when he was taken into the care of LanzÁnimal, whom’s team did a great job at making him the confident donkey he is now. Watch this small video of his arrival at their caring place.

You can support us in raising this adolescent here or plan to visit the farm.
