JUAN ANTONIO PAPAGNI MECA (AR/ES): a portrait

Juan Antonio Papagni Meca is an Argentinian photographer, relocated in Spain since 2017.

He works on Commercial, Social and Fashion Photography, but he is constantly exploring the Art world in personal projects.

Juan’s delicate work reflects his own desires, pain, dreams and nightmares, but always shown in a tasteful and classic way. Inspired by reality and social media, he finds beauty in a simple and unpretentious style. Drawing upon his knowledge, experience and travel, Juan creates sensorial images with an element of theatrical and strong aesthetic eye.

He was born in a small village outside of Mendoza, Argentina. Being a gay, closeted male in a conservative and small town, Juan had a difficult childhood. Art became his way to escape from these situations and to express himself. He was always interested in and curious about image, design, fashion, cinema, dance and painting, and decided to pursue a degree in Architecture. But his real passion was Photography.

He usually works with male models. His images can be described as engulfed by a scopic drive of looking and being looked at, of “eating the other’s body with one’s eyes and being eaten by the other’s gaze”. It’s feeling like Narcissus, seeing ourselves reflected in another person. Juan’s work embraces the fatigue of loneliness with self-love. Finding beauty in everyday common situations. What he calls: ‘Poetry of the Image’.

You can see his work on his website or Instagram.
