The lay-out of the farm

The last year we have been working of the lay-out of our farm: what will we grow where and how will we manage all of this land?

Here’s what it is going to look like!

Quite complex you think? We’ll, actually, it is not. We follow the system thinking of permaculture, and have divided our land in 6 zones.

Zones for permaculture farm - Hektor

Six zones

Zone 0 is the central space: our home and our guest suites.

Zone 1 is everything that needs daily attention and that should be easily accessible (for us, for our guests and for supplies)

Zone 2 is a zone for more commercial production.

Zone 3 is a less intensive zone, with fixed plants and fruits.

Zone 4 is where our rescue animals meet the farm: they produce most of our fertilizer.

Zone 5 does not involve human interventions.

So what will we grow where?

In zone 1 we will grow the vegetables, fruits and herbs for our daily use and that of our guests. Zone 2 is subdivided in three different parts: the main huerto, a picking garden (central on the land) and a smaller second huerto with a nursery (on the left, next to our home).

Zone 2 will be mixed potatoes, onions and low-care vegetables as our village is well known for them!

Zone 3 is a huge part of our land, which will be dedicated to fruits (guyabas, citrus, tropical fruits, mora), vines and olives.

Zone 4 is a very specific zone: it’s the home to our rescue farm animals, who help us fertilize the grounds.

Zone 5 is a big piece of mountain land - accessible for our guests after a steep climb - which will be home only to the plants that grow there now, and only endemic plants will be planted here, to strengthen the soil and prevent erosion.
